Education

Education in Economics
Those who begin studying economics at the School of Business, Economics and Law at the University of Gothenburg do an introductory course in the first semester which should give basic knowledge in economic theory and policy and the ability to apply economic theory to actual problems. The course should also give an awareness of economic conditions and developing trends. The basic course consists of four sub-courses, each worth five points (“credits”). The four sub-courses are in macroeconomics, microeconomics, international economics, and financial economics.

For those who choose to continue beyond the basic course, an intermediate-course follows during the second semester. This consists partly of more study within areas covered in the basic course, partly of the option to choose special courses in, for example, environmental economics, public economics, industrial economics, or development economics.

After the intermediate-course there are advanced courses in the third and fourth semesters. The sub-courses then are mainly deepening within areas already studied, but new topics arise, such as law and economics and econometrics. During the third and fourth semesters the student is also expected to write a paper.

Education in Statistics
Courses in statistics are given in the business management program and the logistics program; as independent basic courses at A, B, C, and D levels (i.e., undergraduate semesters 1-4); and as graduate courses.
